Stroud, ON- After 2 significant early season accidents and a blown motor, Queensville, ON veteran Jason ‘Bam Bam’ Witty (No. 19 Matco Tools/Carrot Express Chevrolet) captured his first victory of the season in Week 5 of Sunset’s 2013 campaign.
Taking advantage of his pole starting position, Witty led every single circuit of the 30-lap contest, turning away several challenges from Week 4 winner Anthony Simone (No. 95 Simone Autosport Chevrolet) and Week 3 winner Billy ‘Z3’ Zardo (No. 46 National Exhaust/Hassell Automotive Chevrolet).
“It got a bit dicey coming down the stretch! We had to get a bit wide!”, beamed Witty when asked about the late-race pressure from Zardo. “Zardo was right behind me. Everyone was running tough. Great win. Loved it”
The victory would mark Witty’s first in his brand new McColl Racing Enterprises chassis, and would come 2 weeks after the team blew their primary motor in a qualifying heat race.
“You have to earn every inch out there. That was some good racing. A lot of fun”
When asked about his abundance of work through the early season to keep his program running, Witty was quick to explain, “The trophies definitely help”
Zardo would finish in the runner-up position, followed by ‘Hollywood’ Taylor Holdaway, ‘Mr. Excitement’ Chris Morrow and ‘The Bully’ Dwayne Baker.
In Super Stock action, 2011 division champion Lane Zardo (No. 46 Holmes on Homes/National Exhaust Monte Carlo) would end point-leader Randy Rusnell’s winning streak, earning his first victory of the 2013 season.
The third-generation driver overtook early leader Dennis Cybalski (No. 10 Mountainwide Napa/RDJ Auto Parts Camaro) on lap-5, and held off a number of charges from Rusnell (No. 72 Spira Fire Protection/Truck Trans Monte Carlo) through the later stages of the 30-lap event.
Rusnell would arrive at the line in second, with sophomore Cayden Lapcevich completing the podium. Cybalski and Paul Geniole Jr. rounded out the top-5.
14-year old Brandon McFerran (No. 64 Peter D. Laird Transport Ford) led 22 of 25-laps for his first Mini Stock win of 2013. ‘The Astronaut’ led point leader Warren Paxton, Ben Melenhorst, Ken Townsend and Eric Yorke across the stripe when all was said and done.
