PORT COLBORNE, ON- A review of the racing action from the New Humberstone Speedway for Sunday, August 11, 2013.
Warren Mahoney from Lefroy, Ontario scored the victory for the Ontario Topless Sprint Cars on Topless Night presented by Mike Knapp Ford, Tidyman Maintenance and Port Colborne Laundry night at the New Humberstone Speedway. BJ Willard from St. Catharines, Ontario was victorious for the first time this season in the Cosco Haulage DIRTcar Sportsman. Paul Grigsby from Springville, NY picked up his third Peters Excavating UMP/DIRTcar Late Models feature of the season. Lee Winger from Caledonia, Ontario claimed his third J.C. Auto Street Stocks feature of the season while Kyle Rothwell from Welland, Ontario took home his second victory of the season in the Trackside Decals Mini Stocks. Taylor Vanderzanden from Fenwick, Ontario was victorious for the second time this season for the Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks. Olivier Larocque from Port Colborne, Ontario claimed his second Frontier Auto Dismantler Pure Stock victory of the season.
Warren Mahoney and Mike Stelter led the Ontario Topless Sprints to the green flag for their 25 lap feature event and it was Mahoney showing the way early. John Watson was able to take over the race lead on lap three as Chris Durand and Mahoney battled for second. Mahoney and Durand reeled in Watson but Watson was able to keep the lead. After a lap nine restart, Mahoney used the cross over move to get the lead going into turn three but Watson used the same crossover move to regain the lead on Lap 10.
Mahoney was able to regain the lead for good on Lap 11 as Durand was able to pass Watson for the runner up spot just past the halfway point. Mahoney, Jim Irwin and Jesse Costa raced for the race lead and Irwin went underneath Mahoney but Mahoney was able to keep the momentum and the race lead in the closing laps. Warren Mahoney held off Irwin to claim the victory.
Chris Bellamy and Matt Sharpe led the Cosco Haulage DIRTcar Sportsman to the green flag for their 25 lap Topless Night feature and it was Sharpe leading the opening circuit. Travis Miller spun in turn four to bring out the races first caution.
On the restart, it was Bellamy leading lap two as BJ Willard went underneath Sharpe for second place.
A multi-car wreck on lap four involved Gary Lindberg, Jeff Armstrong, Jordan Cosco, and Joey Mastrioanni slowed the field down for the second time. The restart saw Bellamy and Willard lead the field and BJ Willard took the lead on lap five. Adam Leslie, Greg Panunte and Brad Rouse raced their way into the top five After a second multicar tangle in turn four on Lap 7, BJ Willard continued to show the way as Adam Leslie, Greg Panunte, Brad Rouse and Cody McPherson raced in the top five.
Leslie and Panunte would battle for the runner up spot as Panunte would get around Leslie. James Michael Friesen would pass McPherson for fifth at the race’s halfway point as the field was still chasing BJ Willard. Michael Bosse spun in turn three to bring out the yellow on lap 15, setting up a ten lap shootout. Cody McPherson regained the fifth spot from Friesen as he battled Rouse for fourth.
Gary Lindberg, involved in a couple skirmishes earlier in the event, raced his way back into the top six after passing Austin Wood. BJ Willard was on a Sunday night cruise as Willard would pick up his first win of the season. Greg Panunte would finish in second and was followed to the line by Adam Leslie, McPherson and Rouse.
“Its nice to the win here finally after the season we have had here this year” said Willard in Victory Lane.
Rob Ledingham and Tim Gillespie led the Peters Excavating UMP/DIRTcar Late Models to the green flag for their feature event and it was “the Roadrunner”, Ledingham showing the way.
Jorden Peters moved into second early on as Paul Grigsby entered the fray to make it a three car battle up front. Grigsby was able to get underneath Peters and moved into second and then on lap six, went underneath Grigsby was able to jump into the race lead. Bill Holmes moved up through the field as he got around Peters for third and then went underneath Ledingham and moved into second place. Paul Grigsby pulled away from fellow New Yorker Billy Holmes to pick up his third win of the season. Ledingham would finish in third and was followed by Rob Pietz and Jorden Peters completed the top five.
Paul Reichel and Lee Winger led the J.C. Auto Street Stocks to the green flag for their main event and it was Winger in the Blue Moose machine showing the way. Paul Reichel and Robbie Wichert spun in turn four to bring out the caution on lap three.
On the restart, James Thompson, Steve Robison and Jason Fontaine battled for second place with Thompson and Fontaine getting into second and third with Cory Turner and Robison racing in the top five. The top four pulled away from Robison as Robison had to deal with Ryan Turner and Billy Bleich in a three car battle for fifth at the cross flags.
After a Lap 11 restart, Winger and Thompson went side by side for the race lead and as they came off turn four, Winger still with the advantage. After Winger got loose exiting turn four, Thompson had a great run on the bottom of the speedway but Winger carried his momentum on the top side of the speedway to keep the lead. Thompson and Fontaine made contact exiting turn one and Thompson spun and brought out the caution on lap 19. Thompson was able to continue as Fontaine went to the pits.
The green-checkered finish saw Cory Turner go underneath Winger through three and four but Winger held off Cory for the win. Ryan Turner would finish in third and was followed to the line by Paul Reichel and Billy Bleich Jr.
Nate Monahan and Kurtis Wiley led the Trackside Decals Mini Stocks to the green flag for their feature event and the front row was still side by side at the end of lap number one.
Kyle Rothwell went three wide with Monahan and Dave Small with Rothwell jumping into second place. Rothwell then was able to take the race lead away from Wiley on lap four as Kyle Pelrine got around Wiley and moved into the runner up spot on lap five. Rothwell pulled away from Pelrine with Evan Curtis racing his way past Wiley to move into third place in the late going.
Brandon Iudiciani and Nate Monahan spun in turn three to bring out the caution on Lap 13, setting up a green-white-checkered finish. On the restart, Evan Curtis was able to get to the back bumper of Pelrine for second place but Rothwell was able to hold off Kyle Pelrine to score the win.
Adam Nicholls and Taylor Vanderzanden led the field of Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks to the green flag with Nicholls showing the way over Vanderzanden. Mike Toovey raced his way into third place as the top two pulled away from the field.
Toovey, Craig Vlasic and Hilary Haegens battled for fourth just as Toovey tried to duck downstairs of Vanderzanden for second place. Hilary Haegens passed Vlasic for fourth place and Colton Ledingham raced his way into fifth. Nicholls great race came to an end on Lap 12 after suffering a flat right rear tire.
With Nicholls having problems, Vanderzanden inherited the race lead and Vanderzanden was able to hold off Mike Toovey to claim his second win of the season.
Mason Smith and Olivier Larocque led the field of Frontier Auto Dismantler Pure Stocks to the green flag for their feature event and it was Larocque quickly pulling away to lead the opening circuit. Brad Booker passed Smith to move into the runner up spot. Booker and Smith were joined by Brad Alward, Sam Iftody and Kyle Tomaski in a five car battle for second and Mason Smith was able to regain the runner up spot just as the cross flags was displayed to the field.
Alward, Tomaski and Iftody battled for third place for the entire second half of the race as Alward was able to keep the third spot. Olivier Larocque would pick up the win over Mason Smith with Brad Alward holding off Sam Iftody and Kyle Tomaski to complete the top five.
HUMBERSTONE NOTES: Car count report for Sunday August 11th: 24 Sportsman, 14 Sprints, 8 Late Models, 16 Street Stocks, 16 Mini Stocks, 12 Pro 4 Trucks and 10 Pure Stocks for a total of 100 cars pitside. Chris Bellamy, a sophomore Sportsman campaigner from Hamilton, Ontario won his first career heat race and the same can be said for rookie driver Derrick Hodge from Port Robinson. Gord Bennett and Dick Mahoney were unable to start the Ontario Topless Sprint Car feature due to both drivers flipping during their respective qualifying heats. Both drivers walked away uninjured.
Racing returns to the Port Colborne oval on Sunday August 18th as Dilts Piston Hydraulics Incorporated presents the DIRTcar Modifieds plus Sportsman, Late Models, Pro 4 Trucks, Mini Stocks and Pure Stocks plus a Sherkston Paintball Target Contest. The Street Stocks will have the evening off. Gates will open at 4:00pm for both the pits and the grandstands and racing will begin at 6:00pm sharp.
We are only four weeks away from the Mike Knapp Ford Safecracker 100 for the DIRTcar Sportsman. 15 lucky participants including the seven winners from the All Canadian Championships including Erick Rudolph (DIRTcar Modifieds), Gary Lindberg (DIRTcar Sportsman), Rob Ledingham (Late Models), James Thompson (Street Stocks), Sam Pennacchio (Pro 4 Trucks), Tyler Lafantaisie (Mini Stocks) and Kyle Tomaski (Pure Stocks) will have one opportunity to type the lucky code to win $100,000.
