OHSWEKEN, Ont. (June 25, 2019) – The Action Sprint Tour is ready to roar back to life for its third race of the season when the series stops at Merrittville Speedway on Monday, July 1 for a Canada Day showdown. The sophomore tour is off to a strong start to the season with two different winners in as many races and one rainout that came at Humberstone Speedway last month.
While the two events so far have been won by two different drivers, neither of them has been over the age of 20. Port Colborne, Ont. teenager Josh Hansen won the season opener at Merrittville on May 20 and recorded a second-place finish at Southern Ontario Motor Speedway on June 8 to claim the series point lead. Hansen is running the full AST schedule in 2019 while also competing full-time in 360 Sprint Cars on Friday nights at Ohsweken. The third-year Sprint Car pilot has clearly improved and will look for another podium finish to celebrate his nation’s birthday.
The other winner was Binbrook, Ont. driver Liam Martin at Southern Ontario Motor Speedway. Martin had a 13th-place finish to start the year at Merrittville and will be eager to get another podium finish when the green flag drops Monday night.
Glenn Styres Racing driver Jesse McDonald has also had a strong pair of races on tour this season. McDonald has second- and fifth-place finishes to start the campaign and has also been strong on Friday nights at Ohsweken. The Enriam No.88 led eight laps during the season opener and should be a top contender on Canada Day.
Caledonia, Ont. driver Ryan Hunsinger also has a pair of top-fives to start the season. Hunsinger’s second season on tour is his first driving for himself in his No.r52. He’ll look to improve on finishes of third and fifth with a win this holiday Monday.
Jacob Dykstra, Blaine Barrow and Brad Herron all have top-fives as well this season. Dykstra finished on the podium at Merrittville and in seventh at SOMS. Barrow meanwhile had finishes of 11th and fourth, respectively. Herron has only made one start this season, a fourth-place finish at Merrittville.
The 2019 Action Sprint Tour season continues at Merrittville Speedway on July 1, 2019 with race time scheduled for 7:00pm. Pit gates open at 4:00pm before the spectator gates open at 5:00pm. In addition to the Action Sprint Tour, the Northeast Late Model Alliance, RoC Sportsman Tour and Hoosier Stocks will also be in action. Adult grandstand admission is $20, while Seniors/Youth $18 and Youth 8-12 are $8. Kids under 8 are free. For additional event information, visit www.merrittvillespeedway.com.
