WINNIPEG, MB (June 24, 2013) After following the the Lightning Sprint scene for the past five seasons, there is one event that really speaks out about the people and the sport of open wheel racing in this region.
The Chad Olson Memorial is set for Saturday, July 13 at Minnesota’s Greenbush Race Park.
Chad Olson raced a Mini Sprint at Greenbush from 1999 to 2001. Although his time in that class was short, his love for racing was always evident.
In September of 2005, Chad was diagnosed with cancer and battled for 13 months before succumbing to the disease.
In his honor, a special race was created in the Lightning Sprint class. The $1,000.00-to-win Chad Olson Memorial made it’s debut in 2009 and ran for three years. The closure of Greenbush Race Park for the 2012 season halted the event, however, with the reopening of the track this season, so did the return of the Memorial race.
Regional racers from North Dakota, Minnesota and Manitoba have participated in this event. Past winners are Roland Bernard (2009), Cory Wimpfheimer (2010) and Brandon Johnson (2011).
