Tyler Hawn celebrates his OSCAAR Hot Rod Series win in Victory Lane at Kawartha Speedway

ORO STATION, Ont. – June 5, 2017 – Tyler Hawn made history on Friday night when he won the inaugural race for the OSCAAR Hot Rod Series at Kawartha Speedway. The Oro Station, Ont. driver pulled double duty between his OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Model while also making his debut in the Hot Rod Series with a 1967 Pontiac Beaumont.

“I had a lot of fun in that car,” Hawn said following his win. “That was pretty cool. This car has gone through a huge makeover. We had to do a ton of work to it. We didn’t even know how it was going to handle off the trailer, but in first practice I felt I could put the car anywhere.”

The Hot Rod Series is designed for a resurgence of 1960s- and 1970s-styled stock cars. All cars in the Series are required to have pre-1974 bodies. Hawn struggled off the start in the 25-lap feature, but rolled around the outside lane once he got up to speed. He took the lead from Darryl Fice midway through the race and cruised to the first checkered flag in the Series’ history.

“We screwed up our gear change, so on the start everybody would pull away by three car lengths,” Hawn explained,” but this car in the high line would just get going. I was wide open on the throttle before the center of the corner. It seemed like you would go into the corner and mash the throttle and it would actually help turn the car. I’ve never had that before.”

Hawn also had another exciting night in his Fox’s Bakery and Deli No.2h Super Late Model. Hawn earned his first Heat Race victory of the season while also recording a third-place result. In the 40-lap main event, he raced to a seventh-place finish.

“It was a good race,” Hawn said,” but that car has had a bad push all night. We threw some stuff at it and we were on the phone with Brian McDonald. It helped, but as soon as the sun went down, the high groove was all I could do.”

Hawn was able to use the outside land effectively for most of the race and held off Ryan Kimball in a battle for the sixth position throughout the first half of the main event.

“It was fun,” Hawn said of his run on the outside. “There’s nothing I love more than running on the outside with guys. You can rub, you can bump, but nothing intentional. That’s good racing and that’s what we had tonight.”

The No.2h eventually slipped to a seventh-place result. Without a fresh set of American Racer tires on the car, Hawn was not able to maintain the same corner speed at the end of the race.

“We didn’t bolt new tires on for this race, simply because we didn’t have time,” Hawn said. “I ran the card hard on the outside with Kimball. He ran me hard, but clean. We had a good run and I think I just used up my stuff running on the outside.”

Regardless, Hawn feels he and his Hawn Motorsports team made further strides to improve their car for the remainder of the season. The team now has three weeks before the next race at Flamboro Speedway on June 24.

“It’s a step forward,” Hawn said. “We have to figure out our push issue, but it is what it is. It’s part of racing. It felt really good to be running with these guys.”

Hawn was also happy with the result given he was short on crew members for the Friday event at Kawartha.

“I have to give a big thanks to my crew,” Hawn said. “We were short by a couple of guys this week so everybody was working extra hard.”
