MOUNT FOREST, ON – Four weeks into his 2013 campaign at Sunset Speedway, Streamline Race Products house car pilot Andy Kamrath has already weathered a number of ups-and-downs. Working with a new chassis, fabricated entirely in-house at S.R.P, and a new hometrack boasting some of the biggest names in Ontario short track racing, Kamrath has been forced to work overtime early in the season to find a package that worked.
“We’ve tried a variance of different setups so far,” explained the Owen Sound, ON transplant. “This is a brand new car to us. It’s the first chassis that Shaun [McWhirter] has designed and built entirely at Streamline, and Sunset’s a brand new track to us. We had a couple weeks where we didn’t like what we had in the car, but as of late, we’ve hit on a package that we’re extremely comfortable with.”
For Kamrath, a 12-time Sauble Speedway feature winner, competition is nothing new. The 23-year old cut his teeth racing against the likes of provincial heavyweights Jason Parker, Dan Wright and Roy Wilkie. However, the depth of talent at Sunset – week after week – is something ‘The Instant Classic’ is adjusting to on the fly.
“There’s no question, Sunset is the deep end of the pool as far as the Limited Late Model division goes. The number of drivers with championship credentials is incredible, each of our weekly features is every bit as challenging as a Crown Jewel event. But iron sharpens iron – racing against this calibre of competition will only make our team stronger.”
The Kamrath & McWhirter combination is coming off of a May 25th event that saw them earn their first top-5 of the 2013 season. A fact that has the entire team optimistic about the rest of the Sunset season.
“We had our strongest run this season last Saturday. We’re sitting 6th in points and the car is only getting better. Shaun and I are working together as well as we ever have, I have every reason to believe that we’re going to be a contender all season long.”
