February 24, 2015- Rick Walt and Walt Motorsports announced that they will be running the full Sunset Speedway Sauble Falls Limited Late Model schedule for the upcoming racing season.
“I think with the switch to Sunset, we are looking to run inside the top ten each and every night, and we have put a lot of effort into making that happen,” Walt commented. “If we can steal a win or two through the year, that’s the ultimate goal.”
The past couple of seasons, Sunset Speedway has boasted some of the strongest late model fields in the province of Ontario, with full fields of 24 cars on any given night. That is only looking to increase for the upcoming season with the unfortunate closure of Barrie Speedway.
“The competition level is unreal down at Sunset,” Walt said. “So many great drivers with Morrow, Baker, Witty, the Hallyburtons, and Walters. Competition is as high as you will see in the province and we hope to add our name to this list.”
Sunset Speedway announced earlier this month that they have joined the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program, which Walt says ultimately solidified their decision.
“Drivers will see the benefits to NASCAR all season long and most importantly at the year-end banquet,” Walt commented. “Having NASCAR is a huge deal for us.”
The addition of NASCAR brings forth a change to Sunset Speedway’s normal layout, which will change from a single 50 lap feature each night to a pair of features. Walt grew used to the format last year, running Barrie Speedway for the full season.
“Double features are fun to run,” he said. “It gives you two chances and/or two big winners each night. If you are able to double down, its the greatest achievement. We were fortunate to win double features a couple times and there’s nothing better! If you wreck in the first one now, that’s a different story; you better get working hard to be ready for feature two. It wears on a team all year long if you are not ready for it.”
Walt is looking to have another successful season following a solid rookie year that saw him score nine feature victories and finish second in Barrie Speedway’s Limited Late Model Points Standings. He also went on to post a solid top-10 finish at the Autumn Colours Classic.
Of course, everything would not be possible without sponsorship support, which Walt Motorsports is glad to welcome back their sponsors for the new season – Cindy Snow ReMax, Rust Check Canada, Kitchen Tire, Eisses Pumping Services, Oro Collision, Abstract Salon, Simone Autosport and Hotc.
