The vans, which feature a driver and a passenger navigator, were forced to race around the infield light pole on the backstretch as part of their eight-lap feature distance. The obstacle created all kinds of slicing and dicing as drivers had to race their opponents while avoiding incoming cars to the backstretch loop. In the end, Steve Insley and Ken Haight's No.47 held off a tough challenge from Adam Flieler and Jenn Koebel's No.11 to claim the checkered flag. The Lloyd Moore and Crystal Stewart No.133 was third.
At intermission, Greg and Shari Belyea of the Kids R Kool foundation presented a $500 cheque to Bailey Graham and Amanda O'Blenis, the organizers of the Brighton Speedway Kids Klub. The donation will go towards extra activities for the Kids Klub for the rest of the 2016 season as well as the 2017 year.
Potts Claims Fourth Pro Late Model Win
Brighton driver Phil Potts (No.29 Vanderlaan) scored his fourth win of the season with an impressive drive to the front in a non-stop 30-lap Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Model feature. Potts started ninth in the field and methodically paced his way forward. A lightning fast racetrack where the top groove was the quick way around played to Potts' strength.
Port Hope's Austin King (No.89 Durmach Excellence In Tooling) led the field for the opening eight laps after starting on the pole. He had to contend with Picton native Tyler Rand (No.84 Terry's Taxi) for the top spot early on. Trenton's Kyle Sopaz (No.12 Lots and Lines) started third, but took the lead in the inside lane on lap nine. Sopaz remained on the bottom while Potts steamrolled his way to the front in the top lane.
Potts was in second on lap 18 after passing two cars on the same lap to take the position. Sopaz held a full straightaway advantage at that point, but it quickly evaporated as Potts caught him for the lead on lap 24. One lap later Potts was in the lead using the same outside lane. Sopaz tried the top for the final five laps in a last ditch attempt to retake the point, but Potts was far too strong against the outside cushion and cruised to the victory. Rand, Adam Turner (No.92 Village Variety) and Steve Baldwin (No.5 Pro Advantage Sports) completed the top-five.
Hennessy Completes Six Pack
Andrew Hennessy (No.87 RJ Equipment Rentals) won for the second week in a row in a race that was nearly a carbon copy of his victory seven days prior. Polesitter Kraig Handley (No.91 Tri-Canadian Energy) paced the field early and third-place starter Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) quickly jumped in to the second spot as the top two broke away from the rest of the field.
On lap six, Ferguson and Handley raced side-by-side for the lead, with each taking turns leading by a nose at the flag stand through the five-lap battle. Ferguson eventually emerged with the lead on lap 10, but Handley maintained his inside lane to retake the point at the halfway mark.
On lap 16, Ferguson brought out the second caution of the race when his transmission failed. The restart gave Hennessy a shot at the lead after he raced to second following his 11th-place starting spot. The two drivers battled wheel-to-wheel at the drop of the green flag. Hennessy made the outside lane work and took the lead on lap 20.
From there, Hennessy had to protect the point on the final restart at lap 23 where he chose the outside lane and held off Handley in the green-white-checkered finish. Derrick Greig (No.48 Greig Truck and Trailer), Shawn Gregory (No.1 PartSource) and Josh Hennessy (No.88 A&A Haulage) completed the top-five.
Ramsay Wins Tough Pro Stock Feature
Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire) overcame a lap five incident and drove through the field over the final 20 laps to win his sixth Brighton Automotive Pro Stock feature of the season. The race was also the final leg of the Larry's Towing Pro Stock Triple Crown.
Mike Freeman (No.51 Boyer Chevrolet) took the early lead, but contact with Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt's Landscape Service) in turn four while the two battled for the lead on lap five created chaos. Anderson spun, collecting a handful of cars, including Ramsay, and after a brief trip to the pit area, all were sent to the rear for the restart.
Wade Purchase (No.53 Independent Alternation and Starter) assumed the lead and had to deal with Rich Sanders (No.29 Orange Motorsports) in a thrilling side-by-side battle. The two drivers raced that way for 10 laps until Purchase emerged with the lead. Ramsay, meanwhile, was in fourth by the time of a lap 18 caution and used the restart to jump to second.
From there, he tracked down Purchase and took the lead on the outside with two laps to go, the same lane he used to get to the front. Purchase couldn't recover the top spot over the final two circuits and settled for second ahead of Sanders, Anderson and Brandon Murrell (No.19 Hannah Motors).
French Scores First Comp 4 Win Since June
Tyler French (No.0 Empey Tire) waited patiently for the opportunity to get by Matthew Moore (No.14 Farl's Auto Body) and capitalized on a chance with two laps to go to win his sixth Bill's Johns Comp 4 feature of the season.
The caution-free race saw Moore jump to an early lead after starting outside the front row. On lap 13, Moore slipped up to the top lane in turn four and French drove to the bottom as they race in to turn one. French completed the pass for the lead in turn three and led the final lap and a half to secure the victory.
Luke Toms (No.19 Gardenhill Towing) raced nose-to-tail with the top two cars and held the third position at the finish. Peter Moore (No.17 Sherry's Pet Grooming) and Brady Greer (No.94 Greer Excavating) completed the top-five.
