Scheduled for Saturday were practice and qualifying sessions however the weather in the vicinity of the race had other plans. Kennington chose not to participate in an abbreviated practice session and the qualifying portion was cancelled due to extreme weather. By rule cars would line up for the 50-lap race according to points which put the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge sixth on the grid.
“It made no sense to practice in the wet” explained Kennington. “Race day is going to be sunny and warm so the only thing you’re doing is risking equipment” he added.
Organizers added a 30-minute practice to the schedule Sunday and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge was fast.
“We used old tires and the car ran super” said Kennington. “I think we’re going to be good”.
The prognostication for the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge was correct and Kennington maintained his position near the front of the field for the entire race. Whether the field was cycling through mandated pit stops for fuel or slowed because of caution periods, Kennington was always in the hunt.
In the closing laps he fended off challenges and claimed a fifth-place finish in the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge at the historic race.
“Super pleased for the team, what a group to battle through the weather, barely any track time prior to the race and the car ran great” stated Kennington.
“This is one of the great racing events in Canada and I’ve been fortunate enough to win here in the past. I’m really happy for Castrol and all the huge turnout they had here for the race. This success has made us hungrier to get that next win too”
