INDIANAPOLIS, IN - INDYCAR, the sanctioning body for the IZOD IndyCar Series and Firestone Indy Lights, announced today it will not return to Edmonton in 2013."When we finalized our schedule for the upcoming 2013 season, it unfortunately did not include Edmonton," said Randy Bernard, CEO, INDYCAR. "We thank the city of Edmonton and all the fans for their support of the event over the last eight years."
Bernard added: "More importantly this has not affected our plans for a minimum of 19 races next season, and we remain optimistic that we will return to having two races in Canada as early as 2014. We anticipate announcing our full 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series schedule the first week of October."
From Amy Konrath, INDYCAR
UPDATE: Here is a story on the cancellation in the Calgary Herald.
NOTABLE: There is a new 2.7 km road course more than halfway completed on the property at Castrol Raceway, adjacent to the Edmonton International Airport. The owner of that property, Rob Reeves, recently told Inside Track that he had no plans to host the Edmonton Indy, but that he would be interested in talking with the people at NASCAR (re: the Canadian Tire Series) and the Canadian Superbike Series, to name a few. Watch InsideTrackNews.com for an interview with Reeves in the coming days. Castrol Raceway already hosts several major motorsports events, including the IHRA drag races and the World of Outlaws (on its dirt oval).
