After a fourth-place finish in the OSCAAR Super Late Model event at Barrie Speedway this past Saturday (June 15), four-time tour champion Glenn Watson (above) has confirmed he will return to Barrie in a Limited Late Model on June 22.
Watson, a Barrie, ON native, got his start at the 1/3 mile oval in 1999 and is a two-time Barrie Speedway Sportsman division champion. Saturday's event will mark one of the first times Watson has returned to Barrie to compete in a weekly event since he departed for the ALSTAR Late Model tour in 2004.
Watson's entry will be fielded by renowned chassis builder Peter Schotanus. Gate times and ticket prices for Saturday's event can be found at www.BarrieSpeedway.com.
2006 Don Biederman Memorial winner TJ Woolsey (photo courtesy Thompson Photography) has announced he will be returning to the OSCAAR Super Late Model tour after a three year hiatus. The former Canadian Vintage Modified standout spent a pair of seasons competing at New York's Oswego Speedway in the track's lauded Super Modified division, but long expressed a desire to return to Ontario's premier touring series.
Woolsey has purchased the primary chassis of OSCAAR regular Shane Gowan, and has begun to piece together an engine package to make his return as soon as possible. Woolsey's best season with the OSCAAR tour came in 2009, when he finished third in the final point standings to champion Glenn Watson and runner-up Derrick Tiemersma. For more information on Woolsey, be sure to follow him on Twitter @TJ Woolsey43.
OSCAAR Super Late Model fan favourite George Wilson (above, by Spencer Lewis) has confirmed he will make his return to the tour at the 15th annual Don Biederman Memorial on June 29th & 30th at Sunset Speedway.
The Sault Ste Marie, ON veteran had initially planned on taking a complete hiatus from racing in 2013, but has been able to put together a package in recent weeks that will allow him to run a limited number of OSCAAR tour races centered around Sunset Speedway's remaining four tour races as well as the 21st annual Peterborough Speedway Autumn Colours Classic.
In addition, Wilson will return to fulltime competition on Thursday evenings at Laird Int'l Raceway, in the speedway's Super Late Model division. 'The Steel City Outlaw' will campaign a car for his father Butch Wilson, in an effort to capture his second career Laird Super Late Model championship.
Former Sunset Speedway Ltd. Late Model titlist Kevin Cornelius (above, courtesy Thompson Photography) entered the 2013 OSCAAR Super Late Model season as a heavy favourite to capture Rookie of the Year honours. After two starts, and a pair of top-7 finishes, the Orangeville, ON sits atop the ROTY standings. We recently caught up with Kevin and asked about the transition from LLM to OSCAAR, his impression of the series and what his hopes are for the 2013 campaign. You can find the 1 on 1 here.
Ontario Legends Series standout Nick Ledson made the long-haul to Lake Erie Speedway on Saturday night and notched an impressive fourth place finish amongst some of the top drivers in the Pennsylvania region. The Bradford, ON-based driver has uploaded his on-board footage of the race, you can find it here.
Round 3 of the OSCAAR Modified Tour is scheduled for this Friday (June 21) at Delaware Speedway. In addition to defending champion Gary McLean, Round 2 winner Brent McLean and sophomore standout Davey Terry, Delaware veterans Justin Demelo (above, by Spencer Lewis) and Barry 'The Bear' Newman have both confirmed they will be in attendance.
Demelo has focused the bulk of his racing efforts this season on the Delaware Pro Late Model division, and will be making his first of three scheduled OSCAAR Mod Tour starts when the ground-pounders return to his hometrack. Newman, on the other hand, has not yet competed in anything this season, and will make his 2013 debut with hopes of his first career tour victory.
Flamboro Speedway Mini Stock virtuoso Dave Bailey has uploaded on-board footage of his runner-up effort this past Saturday (June 15th). The video shows Bailey wage another classic battle with 2012 Flamboro champion Billy Schwartzenburg, as the pair duck and weave their way through traffic. This one is sure to entertain, check it out here.
Susan Shaw has uploaded some fantastic footage of Sunset Speedway's 'Father's Day 75' event from June 16. Shaw captured feature racing from the Mini Stock, Super Stock and Ltd. Late Model divisions and has edited it together in a neat 8 minute-long video (Photo courtesy Derek Smith / Racepulse.com).
The camera angle also shows the hotly disputed lap-72 contact between Dwayne Baker and Tom Walters while battling for the lead in the evening's 75-lap main event for the Ltd. Late Models. If you weren't able to make it on Saturday, or simply want to relive the craziness, check out Susan's video here.
