THOROLD, Ontario (November 3, 2014) – Three first time champions were among the many honorees as the Merrittville Speedway Kart Club celebrated the 2014 Lucas Oil Weekly Karting Series Season Sunday November 2 at rural Thorold’s Club Castropignano.
The first of three Champions was Tucker Wood of Stevensville who won his first RCM Racing Equipment Performance Manufacturing Junior 1 Point Championship with seven wins resulting in 592 points.
Dalton Slack of Welland also earned his first Ed McPherson Construction Performance Manufacturing Junior 2 Division Title – winning 12 features over the season tallying 660 points.
Austyn Werstroh of Niagara-on-the-Lake topped the Superior PetroFuels Performance Manufacturing Junior Restricted Flat Head Division Point Standings. En route to his first championship, Werstroh won seven Features to total 640 points over the season.
In the Wilder Racing Engines Performance Manufacturing Senior Animal Division, Corey Bodman of St. Catharines won his third career title winning five features and totaling 610 points.
Merrittville Speedway’s youngest group of karters – the Drummond Home Hardware Novice 1 and Tim Phillips Garage KC Auto Parts Novice 2 Divisions received Competition Awards, as they do not run for points. Owen Kaiser, Brittany Kelly, Spencer Maytum, Jackson Maytum, Aiden Lavallee and Zach were all presented Competition Awards.
Merrittville Speedway’s Kart Club Member Drivers shared in the more than $10,000 in cash point fund and prize awards.
All of Merrittville Speedway’s 2014 Member Drivers in attendance were eligible to win a Invertor Generator donated by Briggs and Stratton and the winner of the $ 800 prize was Junior 2 Competitor Ryleigh Sliter.
The Member Driver Draws also included prizes from Performance Manufacturing, Slack Karts, Priestley Cut Tires, RCM Racing Equipment and Burris Tire.
A number of Specialty Awards were handed out and the winners are listed as follows.
Rookies of the Year: Tucker Wood (RCM Racing Equipment Performance Manufacturing Junior 1), Dalton Slack. RCM Racing Equipment Sportsmanship Awards: Braden Keus (RCM Racing Equipment Performance Manufacturing Junior 1), Anthony Kelly (Ed MacPherson Construction Performance Manufacturing Junior 2), Jacob Wilson (Superior PetroFuels Performance Manufacturing Junior Restricted Flat Head) and Dylan Culp (Wilder Racing Engines Performance Manufacturing Senior Animal).
Clint Winger was presented the Crew Chief of the Year Award for his efforts behind his son Tyler ‘s Rookie Season in the Senior Animal Division. Tyler won four Features in 2014, finishing in second spot – just 16 out of top spot.
Joey Mastroianni was presented the Race Director’s Award. A Merrittville Kart Racing Graduate who has moved on to Saturday Nights as a veteran in the Sportsman Division has returned to Tuesday Nights in recent years as an Official and this past season became Starter. .
