THOROLD, ON – If you have celebrated Canada Day at Merrittville Speedway – you have to know that the Boltworks’ June 30th Event features a Grantham Lions Enduro Qualifier accelerated by Niagara College, $1 Piller’s Hot Dogs in the Grandstand all night and an impressive FIREWORKS Display by Firemaster Productions.
An exciting addition to the already action-packed race card in 2012 finds the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints returning for the only Sprint Car appearance of the 61st Season. The A Main Winner will take home the 2nd Annual Gary Cunningham Memorial Trophy.
“We are so proud to have Lucas Oil back as our tour sponsor once again. In what has been a business deal has turned into a friendship as the entire Lucas Oil staff has just been so supportive of ESS,” said long-time ESS President Chuck Miller. “We had a tremendous season in 2011, and with the influx of so many new teams, 2012 looks to be even brighter…and that’s hard to imagine.”
Merrittville Speedway held its inaugural Empire Super Sprint Event in 1984 and since then has played host 36 times. Going into the 37th A Main there have been 21 different winners with former champion Mike Woodring holding the most at 5 wins.
Going into the next ESS Event at the Lebanon Valley Speedway, (June 16), Justin Barger leads not only the 2012 Championship Tour Points but the Universal American Stars & Stripes Points as well as the Le Groupe Ultra Tour of Canada Series. Two additional events are scheduled before their return to Thorold.
With 24 career ESS wins to date, Barger has yet to win at Merrittville. The Montrose, NY, driver would surely like to take home the Gary Cunningham Memorial. One of the most dramatic ESS finishes came in their last appearance in September of 2009 – one that is still being talked about today. Local Sprint Car Driver Mikey Kruchka appeared to have his first Sprint Car Feature locked up but after a home stretch mishap with eventual winner Chuck Hebing wound up crossing the finish line upside down after making contact with the front stretch wall.
Race Fans hungry for some Sprint Car Racing will not be disappointed and they should come hungry as the Boltworks’ Canada Day Celebration Saturday June 30th also features the annual Piller’s $1 Hot Dogs all night long in the Grandstands.
A Firemaster Productions Fireworks Display will also provide lots of excitement above the track.
“We’re happy to celebrate the end of school and both Canada and the US Birthdays with the mid-season Fan Appreciation Special,” adds Bicknell-Jones, “4 divisions of racing … $1.00 Hot Dogs all night and FIREWORKS … there’s definitely something on the menu for everyone.” Joining the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints June 30th will be the Bobcat of Hamilton DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, Hoosier Stocks and the second Grantham Lions Enduro Qualifier accelerated by Niagara College.
