In epic fashion, Caitlin Johnston of Orangeville, ON, won the historic Can Am Cup over the weekend at the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, formerly known as Mosport International Raceway.
After qualifying 7th, she worked the crowded field, making her passes each lap. Once in the top three, she made her move into the lead, coming up to take the last lap board. From there, Johnston never looked back. “Once I took the lead, and was shown last lap board, I ran like heck. From then on I kept my cool, and just kept in my rhythm, corner by corner,” said Johnston. “It was an amazing feeling to cross the finish and take the checker.”
Johnston is the first female to win the prestigious Can Am Cup, as well as the first Honda powered car to win the event.
This is Johnston’s first win in the Toyo Tires Formula 1600 Series. “It has been a long time coming. We had an excellent weekend. The combination of my first win, being the first female, and the first Honda Powered car to win this event is amazing,” she said. “We have worked very hard towards this. I can’t thank my dad enough for everything that he has done for me over the years. He is a huge support for me, and I couldn’t have done it without him.”
Overall, it was a very busy weekend for the Warp 9 Racing crew. On Saturday, Johnston qualified 6th. After having a good start she made her way forward through the field. At the halfway point in the race, she took the lead. Battling back and forth with second place in the closing laps of the race, she ended up finishing a solid 2nd place.
Caitlin would also like to thank her long time sponsors: Blackstock Ford, Scott Reinhart Trailers, SK Automotive, Petrie’s Top Soil, Can Crete Ltd., Fred’s Tire, Tire Discounter Group and Arthurs Fuel.
