@NewHumberstone • PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO… Ridgeway, Ontario’s Gary Lindberg won his fifth feature of the season and captured the 50 lap special for the PC Works DIRTcar Sportsman at the Humberstone Speedway as part of the annual All Canadian Championships.
Hagersville, Ontario’s Dave Bailey picked up the win in the 50 lap Duel on the Dirt Street Stock event. For Bailey, it was his first career Humberstone triumph. Dennis Lunger Jr from Albion, Pennsylvania won his ninth Pinty’s RUSH Late Model feature of the season and his first All-Canadian crown. Jason Coutu from St. Catharines, Ontario won his first Cosco Haulage Mini Stocks feature event of the season. Mike Toovey from St. Catharines, Ontario won his ninth Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Truck feature of the season, and first All-Canadian Championship. The Vintage Car main events were won by Rob Casti from Mahopac, NY, Kevin Mahoney from Leechburg, PA and Paul Billings from Kingston, Ontario.
The 50 lap main event for the PC Works DIRTcar Sportsman was led to the green flag by James Michael Friesen and Gary Lindberg with Friesen showing the way. Jason Farraway came to a stop on the front stretch to slow the field down for the first time on lap two. The restart would see JMF back up front with Lindberg in second and began to pull away from the field. Lindberg would go to the outside and would pass Friesen to take over the lead on lap six. The caution would come out on lap six for Cody McPherson as he came to a stop in turn four. Chad Chevalier would pass Friesen to take over second on lap nine and would begin to chase down Lindberg. AJ Lewis spun in turn three to bring out the caution on lap 15, erasing Lindberg’s advantage over the field. The restart would see Lindberg jump out in the lead as Friesen would regain the runner-up spot. Jay Mallory would take over third from Chevalier and would begin to chase down Friesen. Lindberg would lead Friesen, Mallory, Chevalier and Rouse at the midway point. The caution lights would be bright once again on lap 26 as Jordan Cosco spun in turn four. The restart would see Mallory pass Friesen for second as Lindberg would pull away. Brad Rouse would battle Chevalier for the fourth. JMF would have issues and pull into the pits while running in the top five as the leaders hit heavy lap traffic. As the leaders hit lap traffic, Rouse would use the slide job to pass Mallory for second, John McIntire would spin in turn one to bring out the caution on lap 46. The restart saw Lindberg and Rouse battle with Lindberg edging Rouse to pick up the victory, his second All-Canadian crown.
Brandon Murrell and Mark Fawcett led the field of JC Auto Street Stocks to the green flag for their 50 lap Duel on the Dirt event with Murrell showing the way. James Thompson would go underneath Murrell to take the lead on lap two. A multi-car pileup in turn one slowed the field down on lap two with Paul Reichel getting the worse end of the incident as he needed the tow trucks to get back to the pits. The restart would see Thompson and Fontaine continuing to set the pace. Thompson would lead as Chris Crawford would pass Fontaine for second. Dave Bailey would go three wide to take over second with Rob Murray racing his way into third. Thompson would maintain the lead using the bottom as Dave Bailey would run the outside groove. Bailey would take the lead away from Thompson on lap 13. The leaders would hit lap traffic right before the races halfway point. Bailey would open up his advantage over Thompson at the halfway mark. Thompson’s strong run would come to an end on lap 26 after having front end damage. The restart would see Bailey jump back into the lead and would open up his advantage of Murray and Justin Ramsay. Jim Lampman worked his way through the field and would pass Ramsay to take over third with ten laps remaining. Brad Sheehan spun in turn two to bring out the caution with seven laps remaining. The late race restart would see Bailey and Murray going side by side with Bailey keeping the lead. Bailey would pull away and pick up the win.
The Vintage Cars raced in memory of Harvey Hainer Sr and Pete Cosco. The Vintage Cars had three features of the night and in the C class, it was led to the green flag by Jim Kirkwood and Alan Byerly with Kirkwood showing the way. Rob Casti would take over the lead early on and would drive on to collect the win. The B Class came out next with Kevin Mahoney and Les Myers battling for the lead early on. Wyatt Van Wart would challenge Mahoney for the lead but Mahoney was on cruise control. Mahoney would drive on to pick up the B Class win. Rick Majka would lead from the outset in the A Class main event. Steve Arbuthnot would take over the lead on lap three from Majka with Rick St Pierre and BJ Willard battling for position. Paul Billings would take over the lead and would drive away to pick up the win.
Colton Ledingham and Dennis Lunger Jr shared the front row for the Pinty’s RUSH Late Model 30 lap main event with Lunger showing the way early. The caution lights would fly early on for Colton Ledingham who spun in turn four. Lunger would open up the advantage as Rob Pietz would move into second place. Lunger would continue to set the pace over Pietz. Ledingham would pass Pietz to take over second with three laps remaining and began to go after Lunger. Lunger would be on a Sunday Night cruise and would drive on to his ninth feature win on the season.
The Cosco Haulage Mini Stocks was led by Jon Janssens and Rob Goulding with Janssens showing the way early. Janssens, Goulding, and Jason Coutu went three wide for the lead with Coutu showing the way. Evan Curtis and Janssens would battle for second for several circuits as Coutu would open up his lead. Kyle Rothwell and Sam Iftody worked their way into the top five by the races midway point. Coutu would open up his lead over Janssens and Curtis. Coutu would roll on to pick up the win, his first of the season. Janssens, Rothwell, Curtis, and Aaron Wiley would complete the top five.
The Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks was led to the green flag by Danny Wurster and Craig Vlasic with Wurster showing the way. Vlasic went underneath Wurster to take over the lead on lap two. The races first caution would come out on lap six as Tony Spitery and Cole Hardy got hooked together in turn one. The restart would see Vlasic, Wurster and Mike Toovey pull away from the rest of the field. Toovey would pass Wurster to take over second just before the halfway point. Vlasic’s strong run went up in smoke on lap 12, giving the lead to Toovey. Toovey would be able to drive away from Wurster to win his ninth win of the season.
PORT NOTES: When the racing action was completed, the fireworks from Red Boss Pyrotechnics lit up the sky and the Outdoor Dance Party powered by Blast Entertainment kept the camping area jumping throughout the night. The complete racing program was completed at 10:40pm.
The month of August will continue to bring in the cars and the stars to the Humberstone Speedway as the Southern Ontario Sprints (SOS) will make their second visit of the season next Sunday, August 9th. The SOS will be joined by the DIRTcar Sportsman, RUSH Late Models, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and the Pro 4 Trucks. Gates will open up at 4:30pm with racing getting underway at 6:30pm sharp.
