PORT COLBORNE, ONTARIO- 2010 DIRTcar Modified Track Champion Mike Bowman from St Catharines, Ontario was the winner in the DIRTcar Modifieds on St. Catharines Truck and Trailer Night at the New Humberstone Speedway while 14 year-old pilot Travis Miller from Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario won his first career Cosco Haulage DIRTcar Sportsman feature event.
Defending Peters Excavating UMP/DIRTcar Late Model Champion Jorden Peters picked up his first win of the season while Lee Winger from Caledonia, Ontario won his first J.C. Auto Street Stock feature of the season. Sam Pennacchio from Niagara Falls, Ontario won his first career Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Truck feature while Sam Iftody from Fenwick, Ontario scored his third win of the season in the Frontier Auto Dismantlers Pure Stocks.
Tyler McPherson and qualifying winner Scott Wood led the field of DIRTcar Modifieds to the green flag for their 30 lap feature with Wood getting the advantage. “The Ransomville Renegade” Ryan Susice got around McPherson for second on lap two with Merrittville winner Mike Bowman taking over the lead on the same lap. McPherson’s troubles early on would continue as he spun in turn one to bring out the caution. McPherson was able to rejoin the field and race on. The restart would see Susice use the outside lane and take over the race lead on lap four. Bowman went underneath Wood for second on lap five. The yellow lights would come back on as George Bosse spun in the Bleich Racing 108 ride in turn two. The restart saw Susice pull away from Bowman with Chad Brachmann getting around Scott Wood for third as “the Real Deal” Chris Steele tried to get around Wood but was unable to at the races 1/3rd mark.
Susice had a five car length advantage over Bowman, Brachmann, Steele and Wood at the races halfway mark with Erick Rudolph, Modified Opening Winner was running right behind Wood and would move into the top five with ten laps remaining. Lap traffic played a huge roll in the races outcome as Susice was able to clear the traffic but Bowman used the cars in the “pick and roll” and Bowman went to the bottom of the track and took over the lead with four laps remaining. Chad Brachmann tried the same move as Bowman but was unsuccessful.
Mike Bowman picked up the weekend sweep as he was able to pick up the Modified feature win. Susice, Brachmann, Chris Steele and Erick Rudolph completed the top five. “We were really good on the bottom of the track tonight and the car was hooked up” said Bowman in victory lane.
Pat Sonnenberg and Chris Bellamy led the field of Cosco Haulage DIRTcar Sportsman to the double green flags of starter John Veach and it was Bellamy out to the early lead. Bellamy then got loose and lost the lead to second generation driver Travis Miller. Bellamy got loose again in lap one and spun to bring out the caution. Miller led qualifying winner Brian Schmidt and Dave Flannigan in the top three. Cody McPherson was on the move early on as he entered the top five on lap five as did Brad Rouse. Flannigan went underneath Schmidt for the runner up spot on lap six and on the following lap, McPherson moved into third. Gary Lindberg, the only feature winner at Humberstone so far this season, entered the top ten on lap twelve and was up to eighth at the races halfway mark as he started to reel in BJ Willard and Greg Panunte. Meanwhile Travis Miller “was in another postal code” as Miller pulled away from the rest of the field.
Cody McPherson went to the outside and used the cushion as he tried to get around Dave Flannigan for second place with a five car pack was behind the battle for second. Travis Miller ended Gary Lindberg’s win streak as Miller picked up his first career feature win. Cody McPherson finished second and was followed to the line by Dave Flannigan, Brad Rouse and Greg Panunte completed the top five.
Bill Holmes and Tim Gillespie were on the front row for the Peters Excavating DIRTcar Late Models and it was Holmes jumping out into the early race lead. Opening Night feature winner Zach Carley went underneath Rob Ledingham for third place and began his chase of the race leaders. Jordan Peters, defending divisional Champion went into the top five and quickly battled for third but the races opening caution came out on lap nine for Ken Winfield who came to a stop on the back stretch.
On the mid-race restart, Holmes regained the lead with Jordan Peters moving into second place and quickly went to work on race leader Bill Holmes and Peters took over the lead on lap ten. Peters quickly pulled away from the field but the caution came back out as Dean Ferri and Ken Winfield came together on the front stretch. The restart saw Peters and Gillespie pull away from the dueling 8’s of Zack Carley and Bill Holmes with Paul Grigsby entering the top five for the first time. Grigsby would quickly pass Holmes for fourth and went after Carley for third. Grigsby would pass Carley for third on lap 17. Jordan Peters would pull away to collect his first win of the season with Gillespie holding off Grigsby for second with Zack Carley and Bill Holmes completing the top five.
Jim Lampman and Ryan Turner led the field of J.C. Auto Street Stocks to the green flag for their 20 lap feature event and it was Turner getting the early lead as Turner would lead the opening circuit. Lampman would go to the outside and try to get around Turner but Kevin Knapp went three wide and passed Lampman for second and stayed on the bottom side of the speedway to take over the lead on lap five. Lee Winger used the bottom to take over third place and passed Ryan Turner for second place with Ryan’s Brother Cory running right behind him. The caution would come out for the synchronize spinning Mike Greene and Rick Moreash.
Winger continued to show the way over Kevin Knapp as the Turner brothers battled for third with Jason Fontaine running in fifth as the race passed the halfway mark. Winger pulled away from Knapp and Cory Turner late in the event and Lee Winger would pick up his first win of the season. Knapp, Cory Turner, Fontaine and Ryan Turner completed the top five.
Adam Nicholls and Sam Pennacchio led the field of Mike Knapp Ford Pro 4 Trucks to the green flag for their 15 lap feature event and it was Pennacchio leading the way. Defending divisional champion Mike Toovey moved into second on lap five and began his quest to get to victory lane and Nicholls, Colton Ledingham and Taylor Vanderzanden running in the top five at the races halfway point. Pennacchio would lead all 15 laps to pick up his first career feature win. Toovey, Ledingham, Nicholls and Vanderzanden completed the top five.
Marcel Beauregard and Roy Crawford led the field of Frontier Auto Dismantlers Pure Stocks to the green flag for their feature event and it was Beauregard getting the early race lead. Mason Smith took command when the field completed the races second lap and quickly pulled away from the field. On the lap seven restart after the Olivier Larocque spin saw Tomaski go to the bottom of the speedway but Smith had the lead. Sam Iftody took over command on the feature on lap eleven. Early race leader Mason Smith would bring out the caution on lap twelve to bunch the field up one more time. Iftody would pull away from Tomaski to pick up his third win of the season.
HUMBERSTONE NOTES: 19 Modifieds, 27 Sportsman, 11 Late Models, 15 Street Stocks, 13 Pro 4 Trucks and 10 Pure Stocks signed in for a total of 95 pitside. Three of the Modifieds, Justin Wright, Mat Williamson and Lance Willix had Big Block power as they were taking advantage of the DIRTcar points. The final checkered flag flew at 10:05pm.
Racing returns next Sunday when Mike Knapp Ford presents Racers go Topless Night featuring the Ontario Topless Sprint Cars. The DIRTcar Sportsman, Late Models, Street Stocks, Pro 4 Trucks, Mini Stocks and Pure Stocks will be on hand as well as a Spectator One-on-One race. Racing will start promptly at 6:00pm with both the Pits and Grandstand gates opening at 4:00pm.
