After a relatively slow start to the 2012 season, Greg Belyea has been getting stronger the last few weeks, and the 2011 champion at Brighton Speedway has started to return to form. With the Canada Day Weekend Championships on the schedule at Brighton, Belyea was hoping for a good run in the 50-lap double points race.
The night began with time trials, and Belyea timed eighth fastest out of the 16 cars on hand. After making some adjustments to the car, Belyea started fourth in his qualifying heat, and advanced to third before the finish. In the 50-lap main event, Belyea started from fifth, and by lap seven he was up to second and challenging the leader. Belyea grabbed the top spot on a restart, and battled through several other restarts but continued to pace the field. By lap 33 Belyea had dropped to third, but fought back to take second, and then took advantage of a lap 43 restart to regain the lead, and cruised to his first win of 2012.
“It was a good race out there tonight. The car worked well on the top of the track, and when we did fall to third we were able to get back up there and take the lead again,” said Belyea. “It was definitely a top groove race track, and once anyone got out front it was really tough to get around them.”
Caley Weese was in the Excel Tower Racing Late Model as well on Saturday night, and a mechanical failure took her out of contention while running in third place.
This coming weekend, Belyea hopes to make the return trip to Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, NY, for the rescheduled Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series race on Friday night. On Saturday night he will return home to Brighton Speedway as he looks to make it two in a row at his hometown track.
“We are going to try and make it back up to Mohawk on Friday, but the work schedule is pretty busy, and that comes first,” Belyea said. “If we can get things done early on Friday we will be there, but I cant say for sure right now.”
