TROIS RIVIERES, QUEBEC, Monday August 8, 2011: Scott Steckly driver of the 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Dodge started the GP3R 100 weekend with a third in practice and backed it up with a second place qualifying effort. Steckly managed a third place finish in the rain and another podium.
In practice Steckly ran a few laps posting a time of 1:08.380 which was third quickest when he felt something break in the transmission. The team went to work on the car to get Steckly and the No. 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Dodge ready for qualifying.
For qualifying, the cars were sent out in two groups, according to their practice times, and each group was given fifteen minutes to turn laps from which their quickest time would be used to determine starting position. “The car was fast after we fixed the transmission problem, said Steckly. “I knew we would have a chance at a top five qualifying position.” Steckly would qualify the No. 22 second quickest with a time of 1:07.915 and an average speed of 81.101 miles per hour.
Before the race Steckly commented that, “We definitely don’t want to run in the rain, we need a good finish to stay in the points lead. Lot of these guy are here looking to win the race, but we are looking to win the championship so we are going to take it easy and keep our nose clean.”
As the field took to the track for the warm up laps, NASCAR made the decision to being all 33 competitors to pit road to change tires to Goodyear rain tires and, for those drivers like Steckly, who do not run wipers, to apply rain repellent to the windshield to maintain decent visibility.
Steckly would start the GP3R 100 in second position on the outside of row one and with the drop of the green flag, he played it safe and settled back into third, following renowned road racers Andrew Ranger and L.P Dumoulin, No. 27 and 47, respectively.
As the race went on Steckly maintained his third position, driving as cautiously as possible, as he came over the radio and announced to his crew, “Visibility is an issue out here.” The rain continued to pour down and Steckly was still running in third when the first caution came out on lap 11, bunching the field. Steckly would restart on the inside of row two and dropped into third position at the drop of the green.
The Canadian Tire driver was being very patient and would slip back to the sixth position letting the leader’s battle it out ahead of him. With the rain beginning to ease, Steckly would pick up two positions and was running in fourth when the second caution came out on lap 35 for debris.
This caution would set up a green white checkered finish, with the No. 22 restarting in fourth on the outside of row two. After taking the green flag, the No. 23 of Jeff Lapcevich, who was running in third ahead of Steckly, would overshoot turn one, allowing Steckly to move up to third. Steckly, all alone after taking the white flag, would hit his marks and cross the finish line in third place.
After the race Steckly commented, “It was pretty scary out there, I don’t have any experience racing in the rain, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, we just tried to play it safe and I’m happy to bring the Canadian Tire Dodge across the finish line in third. I just want to say thanks to all my sponsors and my crew for all their support and hard work this weekend.”
